Have you ever heard someone say, “I don’t smoke or drink, but boy do I eat when I’m stressed!”? Yeah, it has been said within my family. Sugar addiction, in my opinion, is no different that someone smoking or drinking too much – addiction. Those of us with a sugar addiction, also tend to be emotional eaters, right? Today, let’s talk about gluttony. Gluttony is excess in eating OR drinking.
“Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”
~Proverbs 23:20-12
Lysa Terkeurst’s “Made to Crave” talks about overindulgence in chapter thirteen. As she states, “Overstuffing ourselves with food or drinking until we get drunk or getting wrapped up in the affections of an adulterous relationship are all desperate attempts to silence the cries of a hungry soul.” This is emotional eating and so much more. How can we feel the emptiness in our souls without indulging in food, specifically sugar filled foods for the sugar addict?
Just like the Israelites needed to ask God for the daily portion of manna, we must ask for God to be our daily portion. “Dear God, I have had a long day with my children today. They are finally in bed and I can put my feet up. Please be my portion and help fill my desires for some ice cream or some chocolate or _fill in the blank_?”
What is your area of overindulgence? What drives you to sugar?
